clutch

adjusted the clutch to get some free-play in the pedal... i've got some free-play now, but now the pedal won't return all the way after i push it down... awesome, maybe i should just stop touching it... think it just might be the return spring, since i really didn't touch anything... we'll see...

only a dream....

since it's been so long since i've actually worked on the bug, i dreamed about it last night... drove it to a show with dad... realized halfway that i never adjusted teh clutch, but it seemed to work fine... then we got there, and i realized the lugs were about to come off, had to tighten them... that's about it...

not sure what that means, except that i am afraid to drive it...

Bad, realy bad

I hate when you F*#k up an easy job like swapping out a cam, by bending a bearing that has to have gears pressed on and off to change out! AAAHHHHHRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Good thing I have a porsche garage across the street.

one step forward, two steps back

so, cleaned all the connections and ground leading to the rear lights and got the brake lights and blinkers working properly... after futsing around with the flasher wiring and rear light wiring for too long...

then, took it for a drive down the street... i knew the clutch engaged really high, but when i tried to shift into 3rd it slipped and slipped and finally got into gear... the guy i got it from said he replaced the clutch cable and that it needed adjusting... think that's it, or does it need a new clutch? hope not... oh well, back to the garage...

back to work

didn't have too much time this weekend, but got the license plate light hooked up and working as well as the horn (which sounds sweet!!)... blinkers in the rear aren't working again, might be part of the brake light situation... hope to have that worked out next weekend...

got invited to park the bug downtown for a "bug fest" at the science museum (for actual insects, but the local vw club parks bugs out front for fun)... don't think i'll be ready on september 12th!!!

here's the re-entry... again a little scrapage...

rollin

drove it all the way down the street... amazing... still have a lot of work to do (replace rear drum, adjust/bleed brakes, complete electrics, tune the engine better)... brakes were a tad sketchy, scraped just a bit on the way out (you can hear it)... but it turned and stopped...

the lights are coming along, got the low beams and parking lights to work light... when i put on the brights, i lose one headlight, so gotta figure that out... turn signals work, but the driver side blinks really fast, must have a short somewhere... and oh, i broke the passenger side assembly... sweet...

let there be light...

started to make progress on the wiring... think i have it figured out, up front at least... now just need to clean all the connection and install new fuses and see if it works...

idle?

this is from last week, but i only got it up now... trying to set the idle the right way today, but i turn the air mixture screw all over the place and it doesn't seem to change the idle at all... tried to check the timing, might be off.... the little light i got stays on, so i think the points might be messed up... but still runs halfway decent, just idles a bit rough...

daylight!

fired it up and got it to idle ok... not sure i did it the "right" way, but it's idling without stalling at least... pulled it out of the garage!! didn't have the balls to see if i could make it out of the driveway (subhashni wasn't home to help me if i got stuck).... so turned it around at the top, and blew the saw dust off...

tires rub at lock, might have to get different ones... brakes seem to be working, but probably need to be adjusted.... steering seems ok...

hi-tech alignment

puchased some hi-tech equipment to do an alignment myself... i'd explain it, but it's too complicated... (my original idea didn;t work since i couldn't stand a 2X4 on end under the car)...

got some new (old) rear drums since your welding skills are lacking...

here's what the back of the stud looked like after i pulled it out...

Little Stuff

I took the body back off after mocking up the gas tank and the steering wheel. I also mounted the oil cooler and the new trany and hooked up the linkage to make sure it fit. Now I have to pull everything off and paint. Getting closer to my first spin.

nothing works

got new spindle nuts from wolfsburg west, they don't fit...

thought i could fit the steering damper in there... nope, need to replace or re-bend the brake line from the reservoir to the master cylinder...

thought i had bent the rear brake lines enough to clear the shocks... nope, need to try to bend them more or just get new lines and re-do them completely...

tried to fire it up... nope... all that it would do was turn the starter... when i went back to take a look (not that i know what to look for), there was gas sitting on top of the fuel pump (had to look it up to know that it was the fuel pump)... so, not sure if the fuel pump is leaking, or if it's normal that i pumped that pedal too much and it seeped out...

good times... i think i am going backwards now... at least it ran when i got it...

Dude!!

Snug as a bug in a rug (with some help from the buzz saw)

I will mock up the gas tank and stearing, then take the body off again.
Bri, get a move on. I built some shelves and still made a little progress on the bug.
